Vladimir Lenin, also called Vladimir Ilich Lenin, original name Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov, (born April 10 [Ap New Style], , Simbirsk, Russia—died Janu , Gorki [later Gorki Leninskiye], near Moscow), founder of the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks), inspirer and leader of the Bolshevik Revolution (), and the architect, builder, and first head (–24) of the Soviet state. If there are (and there are) anyone who remains a fan of V.I. Lenin and considers him a man unfairly maligned only due to capitalist bias, they should have their naive suppositions dispelled via this book. In Volkogonov's Lenin, the author traces the details of Lenin's life beginning as a born member of the gentry through his early life as a /5. But these statements contained little truth: while Lenin turned his back on Stalin at the end of his life, Stalin remained a fairly faithful disciple of the Soviet Union's founder. The terrors, murders, and famines of the s merely served to build on and intensify what Lenin had begun during the Revolution. In a sharp riposte, Lenin quoted Mephistopheles from Goethe’s masterwork: “Theory, my friend, is grey, but green is the eternal tree of life.” A number of his own close comrades denounced him.
